About the Flocks Project
The Flocks Project was born out of the commitment by American Ornithological Society (AOS), Association of Field Ornithologists (AFO), and Wilson Ornithological Society (WOS), to make ornithology a more inviting field to all current and aspiring ornithologists by removing social barriers to inclusion. Our goal is to support community-building through “Flocks”, which are gatherings of people in the ornithological field that share common interests, experiences, and goals in supporting each other. Initial funding from NSF BIO-LEAPS program to PIs Daizaburo Shizuka (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) and Ashley Dayer (Virginia Tech) in 2023 helped us assemble the team, develop and deploy an initial survey (in 2024) and conduct co-creation workshops to design the Flock-formation process with a group of Flock Leaders.
