Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide a safe and supportive space for Queer members of the ornithological community. We define this as a diverse community including any individual who self-identifies as LGBTQIA2S+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Pansexual, , Non-binary, Gender Non-conforming, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Aromantic, Two-spirit, and other queer sexualities and/or gender identities) or questions whether they identify as LGBTQIA2S+. While “Queer” is not used by all LGBTQIA2S+ members as for their own self-identification, we use it in the rest of this Charter as an abbreviation for this broader inclusive community. Additionally, we define “ornithological community” as inclusive of anyone who self-identifies as an ornithologist due to their work with birds as an academic, a researcher, a science communicator, an advocate, a student, a conservation practitioner, a hobbyist, or more. We aim to serve as a resource for Queer ornithologists and actively work to make ornithological spaces more inclusive and welcoming. We seek to foster collaboration and support for Queer individuals across all levels of engagement within ornithology.
Vision Statement
We will serve to gather and share resources to better assist Queer ornithologists in developing and showcasing supportive school and work environments. A primary focus is building connections across generations of Queer folk for the purposes of support, mentoring, and professional development. We are committed to:
Fostering a safe and supportive community for Queer and queer-questioning ornithologists both within ornithological societies and beyond,
Gathering and providing resources to better assist Queer ornithologists,
Connecting generations of Queer folk for support, mentoring, and professional development,
Advocating for the Queer community within ornithological societies and beyond, and
Supporting and promoting other Flocks groups through solidarity and presence.
