Flocks are recruiting new members! Go to our contact page and complete the link
We all need a space to feel we belong and where we are supported. For the past two years, three professional ornithological (study of birds) societies and their members have been working in concert to develop affinity groups—or “Flocks”— to create spaces for ornithologists to gather with those with similar experiences and backgrounds, share resources, and provide support for each other.
Guiding this effort are lessons learned from a survey and conversations with the first and only affinity group for ornithologists.
In one conversation, one Flock co-leader demonstrated the value affinity groups provide scientists, explaining: “It felt like I had a place to go, that I wasn’t going to be alone.”
We were supported by NSF but our funding has been terminated due to shifting priorities in the federal government. In response, we are calling on ornithologists, conservationists, scientists, and those who want to support inclusive science and conservation to champion this cause by donating to the project. Feeling safe, welcomed, and having a community to belong in is important and necessary for all of us.
