Mission Statement
The Supportive Association for Neurodiversity & Disability (SAND, otherwise known as The Sanderlings) is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and accessible environment within the ornithological community. Our mission is to:
Advocate for equitable accommodations at conferences, during fieldwork, and for career opportunities.
Provide a supportive network for neurodivergent and disabled ornithologists, with flexibility to diverge or expand pending new members.
Educate the ornithological community on best practices for accessibility and inclusion.
Collaborate with leadership to implement policies that remove barriers and promote diverse participation.
By centering the voices and experiences of neurodivergent and disabled individuals, we aim to build a stronger, more inclusive ornithological community.
Vision Statement
We envision an ornithological community where neurodivergent and disabled scientists, birders, and conservationists are fully included, valued, and supported in all aspects of research, fieldwork, professional meetings, and leadership. Through accessibility, representation, and mutual support, we strive to create a space where all members can thrive and contribute to the advancement of ornithology.
